One of the great diplomatic blunders of post-World War II American history occurred when April Glaspie, the United States Ambassador to Iraq during the George Herbert Walker Bush Administration, hinted to Saddam Hussein that the U.S. didn’t really care whether Iraq invaded Kuwait.

“We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait,” the esteemed ambassador intoned. “Secretary [James] Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960s, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America.”

Saddam, being the brigand he was, took her weak statement for what it was, an invitation to invade. We live today with the consequences of that weakness. Had Glaspie told Saddam in no uncertain terms that, if he dared to violate the borders of Kuwait, America would obliterate him, it is likely he would have refrained from invading and all our lives would be very different indeed.

For one, we would likely never have met Barrack Obama, or at worst, he would be a golfing, reluctant U.S. Senator, since his ascension to the White House was aided greatly by the second Iraq war – another consequence of Glaspie’s diffident pronouncements. Weakness begets a myriad of disasters and words have consequences. Words of strength, especially when uttered by those who have the power to back it up, are the cement that holds tyrants and catastrophe at bay.

Barrack Obama is no stranger to words of weakness that invite bad consequences. His bizarre and pathetic supplication to Moslem radicals in Cairo at the outset of his presidency likely helped set in motion the fall of Hosni Mubarak, a staunch American ally. Obama’s indifference – and here I am being incredibly charitable – likely facilitated the rise of the Moslem Brotherhood in Egypt, leading to oppressive strictures and repressive persecution of women, Christians and other minorities – and much worse.

The consequence of the “Arab Spring” revolution that installed the dictatorship of the Moslem Brotherhood in Egypt is the war against Israel from Gaza. Mubarak never would have permitted the Hamas terrorists of Gaza to import thousands of mid-ranged missiles. That happened thanks to the Moslem Brotherhood regime in Egypt led by Mohamed Morsi, the consequence of weak words by American president.

Obama’s feeble immigration policies and pronouncements are another example of weak words bringing disaster. His refusal to prosecute or even detain illegal immigrants – and even illegal immigrants convicted of murder! – signaled to our southern neighbors that America’s doors are open and they merely needed to hop the border to stay here. As a consequence, a dystopian flood of children, adults, gang members and, probably, terrorists, marched north and stormed our border states.

As if his bad proclamations had not created enough problems, since the invasion, Obama and his minions have been financing with our tax dollars the permanent residency of these aliens. School districts and other public services are strained to capacity, thanks to his feckless leadership and inability to defend or even recognize our national borders.

Just when it seemed that Obama was the king of calamitous speech, along comes another candidate for the throne.

There are few more enigmatic politicians than California Governor Jerry Brown. After all, how many of our leaders bear the moniker Governor Moonbeam? Brown is both the youngest person to serve as governor in America, and the oldest. Unfortunately, his interregnum at pasture didn’t quite confer gravitas or wisdom.

Seeing how solicitous comments from our Community Organizer in Chief caused a tidal wave of illegals to penetrate our boundary with Mexico, Brown decided to double down and ensure that any irresolute immigrant still left in Guatemala and Honduras spur-kicked his burro even harder to land in California.

Speaking at a ceremony in Los Angeles with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, Brown pontificated that everyone and anyone was welcome to border hop and that “it didn’t matter if they had permission to be in the United States.”

Reverting to the Moonbeam persona, Brown promised to speed up border crossings from Tijuana to San Diego. “If we can put a man on the moon, we can put a man from Mexico to California in 20 minutes.” Now that’s efficiency. Heck, at this rate, we should be able to drain all of Latin America within a month!

Breitbart.com reports that, in case any of the invaders from the south were not sure they had a green light from President Obama, Brown pledged “You’re all welcome in California.”

Words have consequences. The governor of the largest state in America may be a nutball, but that does not prevent thousands of illegal aliens from gazing lustily at the Golden State, especially after seeing the massive welcome mat he has unfurled.

America has come to disdain its politicians. With knuckleheads like Brown, it’s not hard to see why. Let’s hope that the next governor of California will have the sense to reverse course, assuming it’s not too late.
